  I haven’t seen a great story on the Flip, that lays out how the company got started, got funded, and eventually got acquired. I know of a few facts, but not about the timeline, so here goes. The CEO of Pure Digital was Jonathan Kaplan. He started by selling shrink-wrapped cameras (those disposable ones you can buy anywhere) to Walgreens and other pharmacies. It wasn’t as successful as he would have liked so he decided to pursue his goal to make a simple camera.  Pure Digital raised $68MM from Morgan Stanley, AllianceBerstein and Sequoia. The idea for the name Flip comes from they Audi key, which had a button, that when pressed, popped out the key. Pure Digital incorporated this idea into the pop-out USB, and hence named their camera the “Flip”. The simple camera was a runaway success, and was eventually acquired by Cisco for $590MM. Jonathan now runs Cisco’s Consumer Business group. I wonder if the Flip has to be struggling with the success of the iPhone, which also has a simple but high quality camera, and the photos can be uploaded wirelessly. Next year Cisco plans wireless camera, which may put it on a level playing field. However, unless Flip does something radical – better pixellation, more technology, ease of uploading onto youtube and facebook, while keeping the simplicity, cameras on smart phones may eventually make the product redundant. Would love to know answers to many questions: When did Pure Digital first raise money ? Did the company raise capital ? What revenues did the company have before it decided to make the Flip ? Where was the Flip designed and manufactured ? Which stores did the Flip first appear in ? Was there a tipping point moment, incident or event for the company ?
