How to find status updates on new Facebook?

Why can't I save Facebook status updates - and the reactions to them - for later?

  • Any photo/video I upload to Facebook is stored indefinitely and accessible in the future, including the likes and comments around that photo/video. Why is this not possible for status updates? I recently posted a really important and personal status update that in a few months will be practically impossible to find b/c of the realtime nature of Facebook. Having updates disappear in the (noise) seems to make little sense to me.

  • Answer:

Status updates are stored indefinitely, similar to photos and videos. The main difference is that our web interface does not offer as simple a mechanism for browsing them (the primary mechanism for doing this is to use the "Older Posts" link to navigate backwards in time on your own Wall, which is admittedly not a fun process beyond going a handful of pages back). The main reasons for this are: Users generally create fewer photos and videos; they are easier to navigate via album-style layouts Photos and videos tend to have more persistent relevance, whereas status updates are often timely Desire to avoid UI clutter, less product demand for easy navigability of old status updates It may not be easily discoverable, but rest assured the information is not destroyed. It is also available via the Graph API, so with some basic web programming, a UI could be created to access and browse your past status updates. (Random plug: I have a filesystem-style UI for browsing the Graph API available at: http://www.somethingtoputhere.com/hackathon/explorer/)

Now you can: it's exported as an .zip archive, that you can expand and explore, or crawl with a personal, desktop search tool. Facebook doesn't think it's useful/priority enough to develop it themselves right now (they have a crazy shortage of engineers/purposely offering developers mad responsibilities, depending on how you see it), but they (or at least who made the export function, and Mark who validated it) trust open innovation enough to make such tools.

You can use tools to capture your status updates and share it in a less-crowded space. There's plenty of options to do so (evernote, springpadIt, etc.) but I'll be self-serving and suggest you to visit the tool we're building (http://symbyoz.com) as it precisely addresses your need of capturing Facebook status updates in particular. Feel free to send me a private message about it if needed.

I don't mind if others don't like me After all, I'm not a facebook status.
