What do you get on your banner?

For a smartphone app, what is the best type of banner ad to display, to motivate visitors to get to the full screen ad, without losing them?  Can we show rich media in the banner ad itself?

  • Answer:

Absolutely! The banner is just a mini web-page. You can, by all means, run rich-media in the banner itself. However, you need to work with a vendor that supports this like Mobspire and must use an SDK which enables rich-media ads. A few campaigns I've helped launch did this.

IAB has defined a standard for mobile rich media advertising. It is called MRAID. This is actually based of ORMMA which was a standard created by some companies in the industries. You can understand more about the standard and why it is important here: http://www.mobdis.com/mobile-site-builder/2011/9/20/mobdis-brings-ormma-to-asia-promises-to-raise-standards-of-r.html

Most ad networks require you to configure an adspot.  That spot defines what kinds of ads you can receive and the size allocated for ads.  You could define the ad for 320x50 and say that you want to receive both Rich Media and Banner ads. The proper ad size is a case by case basis.  There are differences in CTR between the ad sizes but it is a matter of what fits into you app most effectively.
