How can I travel 1320 miles practically?

How many miles per year do people travel using various forms of transportation?

  • How many person-miles per year do people drive in a car, ride on a bus, ride on a train, ride on a boat, and ride on a plane? In the U.S.? In other countries or worldwide? In other words, 1 person traveling 1 mile is 1 person mile. If 1 person drives 5000 miles in a car, that's 5000 person miles for that person in a car etc. So if the average person drives 10K miles per year in a car and flies 1K miles in a plane and goes 100 miles in a train and 5 miles in a car and there are 300M people, that would work out to 3B person-miles in a car etc.

  • Answer:

The National Household Transportation Survey (http://nhts.ornl.gov/) provides a fair amount of travel data by mode, including miles. The current data are from 2009, since the NHTS occurs every few years, that said it is by far one of the most detailed data sources that I've used. People drive 36.13 miles per day. Because sometimes there are multiple people in a car the it's 28.97 vehicle miles per day.[1] [1] http://nhts.ornl.gov/2009/pub/stt.pdf
