How does Amazon sell products under the Amazon.com name?

  • I know Amazon has a fulfillment program where companies can pay Amazon to store the item in the warehouse for shipping and packaging. However, how can Amazon sell products directly under their name? For example, they are selling a Transformer Prime both under fulfillment and under the http://Amazon.com name. Does Amazon purchase goods from suppliers and sell products themselves as well as posting products from other companies?

    Amazon long ago decided to let third-parties sell directly on the same detail pages for the same products which Amazon might also sell. When multiple merchants (including Amazon) offer the same product then Amazon uses a complex algorithm to determine who "wins" the buy box. It is important to understand that Amazon doesn't have to be the seller (merchant) of the item in order for Amazon to make money on the transaction. In many cases, Amazon would prefer to let other merchants handle the fulfillment of an order and simply take a percentage of the transaction for connecting buyer and seller.
