When a video or static ad is inserted into a YouTube video, does the owner of the video (i.e. uploader) share in any of the ad proceeds?

  There are two ways of including an ad in an online video — by making the ad part of the original video file or by inserting it dynamically at the play event. In the YouTube eco-system, the only option available to content creators is the first option. Pre-rolls, mid-rolls, post-rolls and overlays must be "burned in" to the original video file — this means that the message cannot be changed and may complicate the sales process to some extent, as ad buyers are not used to buying inventory this way. However, as this method does not involve YouTube/Google, the content creator gets to keep 100% of any revenues from such sales. (Note: this may or may not be seen as a violation of YouTube's terms of service). The second option — dynamically inserted ads — is perhaps both easier to sell and more lucrative, however as a YouTube user you are giving full control over your ad inventory to YouTube/Google (the two exceptions are if you are part of YouTube's nonprofit program or you pay to feature your video as a promoted video, in which case you have limited access to the inventory). If you are registered for profit-sharing with YouTube, as the content creator, you will receive a piece of the revenue YouTube/Google collects from ads trafficked against your content. To my knowledge, the percent of revenue shared is unknown and likely varies. A third option involves hosting your videos yourself or on a platform such as VidCaster, which gives you full control over your ad inventory and allows you to keep 100% of all revenue earned.
