Which is better career wise for a computer engineering graduate?

Can a computer science graduate enter the nanotechnology field?

  • I am currently a computer science post graduate student at IIT. In high school I totally loved material science, but took up computer science and engineering in college for wrong reasons(money and hype). Now after 5 years I do not see myself making a career in computer science. And now I want to enter the nanotechnology field. Can I do that? If yes, how can I?

  • Answer:

Short answer: Absolutely!  Given a computer science background, one would best be suited for a theoretical modeling role.  If you do not have a strong background in quantum physics, chemistry, or materials science, your best option is to pursue nanotechnology graphics programming.  MATLAB is commonly used to model nanoelectronics, bio-nanotechnology, and nano-mechanical systems.  See http://nanoHUB.org for an extensive use of computer science in nano-related action.

Computer science graduate who can program and perform quality control is in high demand in many fields with the ability and willingness to pay for such help. To answer your question, it depends on what you want to do in the nanotechnology field. I don't know if you're receptive to the idea of working in programming jobs in the nanotechnology industry, but that could be a route for you to enter, and then find a way to get management to help you retrain for more "exotic" nanotechnology R&D roles.

It depends on why you want to do it. What is it that you like about Nanotechnology (shouldn't be hype and money, again) ? Molecular dynamics simulations are a big part of Nanotech, so you can definitely do that. Probably need to know high performance computing / parallel computation etc.

Piyush Grover

Yes absolutely. This is a multi disciplinary field. However u need to know high performance computing / parallel computation, Client Server  etc. U can do programming jobs in the nanotechnology industry at the outset.
