Will I be able to get a job with an MBA degree in Finance?

I have an B.S. (Marketing), MBA (Finance), 5 years experience as a SFA but having trouble getting a job.  Do I need to get an accounting degree to compete?

  • Answer:

Do you want to become an accountant? An accounting degree (or diploma) is certainly a viable option if you want to be an accountant. Do you want to stay in finance? What type of role do you want to obtain in finance or elsewhere that will require an accounting degree? Did your MBA program provide a combined MBA/CA option? Do you have almost enough credits for the accounting designation? I do not know what jobs you are applying for so can not determine if the challenge is the lack of accounting designation or you do not search for or present yourself well for the jobs you are seeking. It could be that the problem lies not with the designation but with your presentation. There are many factors that contribute to obtaining jobs in this economy. Sometimes employers are finding candidates with all the requirements plus more, sometimes there are jobs in places you are not looking, sometimes you are not presenting yourself well. Do more research before doing more education, although education is important I have seen many people return for more when more really was not needed for what they wanted -but clarifying what they wanted and then knowing how to get it was the larger issue.

You say you have a BS in marketing.  You should be marketing yourself. If you cant do that, you might want to consider a career change.
