How old do you have to be to open a non-profit organization?

How do you assign a domain to a non-profit or for-profit company? How do you make sure that the organization has ownership over the domain, rather than an individual from within the organization who purchased it?

  • How do you protect a domain from being taken away by the purchaser of the domain name?

  • Answer:

When you buy a domain, you are able to enter the whois information including the organization name if applicable.  The best way to handle it would be if you have a debit or credit card in the name of the organization, have a domain account set up specifically for the organization and register the domain with that account.  Similarly, if you buy a domain from someone else, pay through the organization and have it transferred to the account of the organization. If it was purchased by one of the individuals of the organization and is in their own account, then you should transfer it to the organizations account, change the whois accordingly, and make sure it is accounted for properly in the bookkeeping as a transfer of assets. In any event, an organization is treated as if they are a person separate from any of the people within it, so any assets of it are to be treated in that manner. As for protection of it, I'm not sure what to tell you except to make sure only people you trust have access to your domain accounts.  They can be as important and sensitive as bank accounts!
