How can I sell an invention?

Invention and Inventions: How can I sell an idea for a medical aid device?

  • I have an idea for a fairly simple yet innovative medical aid device which I believe could be extremely helpful to a large number of individuals...I don't run a company, am not particularly interested in running a company at this juncture, but am interested in seeing this idea come to fruition. Is there a way to sell this idea? Or to find someone who would be interested in doing the actual manufacturing of the device?

  • Answer:

Some steps: Sit down and write out your idea completely. Take some time (from a month to a year) and carefully research the medical device market to see if anyone else is using a device similar to yours. Sit down again and carefully diagram your idea. Create drawings (or have them created) Research the materials you might need. And determine which businesses might benefit from your device. Take your research and your development plans to a trusted friend whose advice you'll listen to and see what they have to say. If they are critical, then make changes to your idea (if possible) and then try again. Repeat as necessary. When you have reached the point where you are satisfied that you have done the best work that you can in developing your device, approach a patent attorney and discuss getting a patent for your device. Listen very carefully to what this person tells you. If after this you decide to obtain a patent, I would then approach a medical device manufacturer (or use the attorney as your intermediary) and have them review your device. They may or may not depending upon whether or not they have any interest. Repeat this with as many businesses as you can until someone expresses interest. If they does express interest, decide at that point whether or not you want to make the device yourself or sell or elase it to the company. NOTE: If you are unwilling to put this much effort into getting your device made, I would then advise you to tell your idea to someone you will and then moving on with your life. Or...simply forgetting about it altogether. if you aren't willing to put in an extreme amount of effort to get your device made , then you are simply wasting your own time and the time of others.

Hi You mentioned you don't want to work on it but would like to see it come to life by someone else I think this is a great way because if you sit on your idea it dies and you already have a stable life which you dont want to change Depending on your comfort you can choose 1.  Share your idea in the general public and see if someone picks it (There are ways to get credit / money if it succeeds) 2. GOTO a university and offer it to students 3. Give it to a specific medical device programme If you share a little - What department / disposable / plastic / electronic  etc.... I can help ...the more you can tell the more specific I can point you   I used to be a medical device innovator for a government program to make simple devices
