FLAC is an acronym for Free Lossless Audio CODEC. So yeah, FLAC files are larger than MP3 (MPEG Layer 3 compressed) files. They are also lossless. A FLAC file can be made from an original uncompressed source like a WAV, AIFF, standard CD PCM format... you probably noticed you're surrounded by acronyms now. If I shrink it to, say, 1/5 the original size, it's going to sound pretty identical to the original. But I could drop it to 1/10th, even 1/20th original size and probably get tracks good enough for the gym... or the lawnmower. Or even tell it to Variable Bit Rate, which lets the MP3 encoder decide how much to compress as it goes, chaning based on need. Some settings will sound good, some pretty terrible. None of these, though, when turned back into WAV, will match the original, bit for bit.Don't Get Ripped Off So I went to all this detail to point out a thing some people have not noticed, but should: when you buy music in MP3, AAC, or other compressed formats, you are not getting the original sound. Sounds good, maybe, but you're getting less than the dude who bought it on CD. Even considering that he got a that CD... a backup copy (nice in theory, though the three huge tubs of CDs I own, that live in a closet, suggest DLs are not inherently evil). So... maybe "NOW!" is a factor too, but really, you should just refuse to pay more and get less. Even better, I'll bet that local record store isn't that far, they'll sell you the CD and give a little human contact for free. And maybe turn you on to your next favorite band.Back To Your Question....  But if you want CD...or BETTER... quality and you're buying a download, uncompressed is the way to go, and FLAC is the best overall supported way to do that (Apple will tell you about the Apple Lossless CODEC, which also does this job). And sure, once you have FLAC files, you can transcode them into smaller files that will fit on devices. I use a thing called dBPowerAmp, mainly because it does very reliable CD rips... and force of habit. One module in it does bulk conversion. But I always like to recommend a FOSS program for the job, if there is one.
