What is being done in third world countries to increase internet accessibility, as devices become affordable to a much larger portion of the population?
-
2012 is set to be the year of the proliferation of tablets - with sub $100 devices (that work) coming onto the market, challenging Apple's dominance, but (more interestingly) meaning millions more are connected. India's Aakash 2 tablet and predicted Android tablets are two examples. Suddenly this is very exciting - especially in the context of third world countries - the talent pool (of young, enthusiastic, switched on, time rich, money poor) will explode, putting more competition in the market, driving innovation, broadening opinion. And not only that, giving a voice to millions of people that have never been heard on the world (or, in some cases I suspect, local) stage. The power shift is in progress. My question? To be connected you need an internet connection, what is being done in third world countries to facilitate such a step forward? (assuming mobile connections with 3/4G isn't a realistic model)

Answer:
3G is a realistic model and its picking up in countries like Kenya. More and more towns are getting 3G coverage and more so from multiple service providers, prices are becoming more reasonable. As we speak 14.3 million Kenyans are connected to the Internet and a majority through mobile means. The solution for the developing world has more to do with electricity in the rural and remote areas and not the price of the devices this means cheap android devices that require charging 2-3 times a day are not going to work out regardless of how cheap they are. The traditional dumb phone model is the better option i.e. having a fair priced device that can stay 5-7 days without requiring a recharge will survive in developing nations.

We take one step at a time in the path of progress. Having a tablet at an affordable price has made us realise how it can change our lives. Now students can even attend virtual classes on tablets ( http://www.wiziq.com/mobile/ ) though it cannot be done at present on Akash. With it will increase the demand for increased connectivity and I am sure the service providers will find solutions for affordable services. Here I agree with Ben that the main concern is electricity not the internet connection.
