What is a good cheap gps system to use for geocaching?

Can you use the Nexus 7 as a GPS system without a data connection with the new Google Maps?

  • If I understand this correct the new Nexus 7 tablet has GPS and the new google maps allows you to download the city maps. Does this mean you can use GPS on this tablet without a data connection? So this will work as a GPS system?

  • Answer:

Yes, but in a limited way. You need to go to the map location first and download it. You can't download the entire "world." http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2012/06/go-offline-with-google-maps-for-android.html

Other answers

Yes, you can use maps and GPS without data connection. But with two conditions, 1) You must download and cache the map ( that is also only for limited area) http://www.topnexus7tips.com/how-to-download-maps-on-nexus-7-new-google-maps-use-offline/ 2) Or just open and explore the route and map you would be visiting ( when data connection available). I think this time it caches the area. So, next time GPS and same area of map will work.

Some GPS apps, eg Copilot, have offline maps so could be used without a data connection. Haven't tried it yet as I don't have a suitable mount.
