How do I get a job in an advertising agency?

  • I recently graduated with a degree in business and a minor in economics in spring. I've been working at a small firm doing online marketing since May. I want to land a job in a marketing and advertising agency. I love the strategy that surrounds marketing and I enjoy the creative process and outcome of the advertising/creative side. That being said, I'm not an artsy person. I don't have a portfolio. So I figured my best chance is to get into the accounts side. So my question is, what skills do I need to get into an advertising agency? And/or, what skills to I  need to get into the accounts side of an advertising agency? Are there certain skills I should go pick up? That I can't afford to do without? I'd love to hear from anyone knows the ins and outs or who has been in my shoes. Thanks!

    To get a job in an advertising agency call them up tomorrow (phone number from the website) and ask to speak to someone about getting a job there.  Most of the time you won't get through - when you do ask them what you need to get a job there.  The thing I find most interesting about working in advertising is that to get a job in advertising, you will have to advertise yourself. As for particular skills - it really depends on what you want to do.  There a hundreds of different job titles available ranging from very qualitative (artist) to very quantitative (high frequency ad exchanges) so you'll want to read up on those to figure it out. The best skill is probably learning to sell yourself.  It's a very competitive industry and people switch jobs frequently.

Experience is what everyone looks for first, so if you can get an internship at an agency that would be best.  I recommend to all college students looking to get into advertising to absolutely, positively not leave college until they've had an internship at an agency. Because account folks are the primary contact with the customer, you can benefit from customer service experience.  Your job is to help the client shape a request, and on the flip side, to deliver bad news and make them okay with it -- customer service experience trains you for much of this. Lastly, if you target some agencies at which you'd like to work, it's always helpful to reach out to someone at the agency and ask them for an informational interview.  You get the chance to make a contact at the exact place you'd like to work, lay your cards on the table, and basically ask them what they want in their new hires.  From that meeting you can shape a strategy for building the skill sets you'll need to walk back in sometime later with a resume and offer them your services. Hi,i worked in advertising agency for year, i will tell you my own experience how i grabbed job in advertising.1 ) First way to create list of advertising agency in your own area than start mailing them your resume and the college projects which you have worked on, i tried this method but i didn't got any response because i was not belong to studies which is needed by advertising agency ,2) another way from i got the job is little hard working and tricky and you need lots of guts to do iti created list of advertising agency from their ranking 1 to 100, i went directly to their office, 5 offices each day and gave my resume to their receptionist or watchman (security)..ya seriously and keep hope the they will forward it to HR, but ready for ignorance, once agency shut their door on my face but if you are really passionate about advertising go with this method it will give you guaranteed return,i did this for 22 days and on 25th day o got call for interview, i went with my all projects which include handmade ideas and best part is on the day of interview i got my internship on the same day.Sometime you have to create opportunity like i made for my self.
