For my bizdev projects I've used HighRise, Salesforce, Sugar and Zoho and my pick is with Zoho. HighRise is too simple and salesforce feels like it's still stuck in 2001 (as mentioned before, not to mention salesforce is pretty pricey I think)..Sugar can become a mess if you don't have good people managing it. Zoho has been the most effective one for me.. (I've never worked for any of these companies :)

I've been using http://batchblue.com/ for some time. It is more affordable than salesforce, and offers less features. But the integration with Mailchimp is a big plus, and I like the way in which you can use 'super-tags'to add a series of custom fields to a contact. Great filter and report option. It is evident that these guys have been working on their software for some years. At least worth an inspection.

Basic features, but seems easy to use and has the full functionality he needs. I've worked with many CRMs including Salesforce, Sugar, Insightly, and Batch Blue. My favorite for awhile was Batch Blue until I tried Nimble.
