What computer field should I major in?

While poor computer knowledge can obviously cause problems for any individual, what (if any) problems do you see for low minority contribution in the field of computer science?

  • Dangerous and unacceptable racial, ethnic and gender-gaps in computer use are well recognized. The presence of such gaps in computer literacy clearly result in lowered employment scenarios, lack of access to timely information, and other disadvantages that diminished access to computers brings. However, it is hard to emphasize that it is not only gaps in computer literacy that are of concern; more serious is that students from minority groups are not learning computer science itself.

  • Answer:

I don't really see it as a racial or ethnic problem.  I do see a gap between tech haves and have nots, but that seems to be based on income inequality, not ethnicity.  I see no inherent disadvantage for any race or ethnicity, outside of income inequality, which contributes to lack of access to technology. Indians and Asians in the United States come to mind as minorities that contribute a great deal to the computer sciences, perhaps disproportionately to their representation among the general population.  Clearly being a minority does not necessarily correlate with a lack of technology-related prowess.
