How to transfer money to Singapore from the UK?

What is the best way to transfer large amount of money from US to Singapore?

  • I am a US expat living in Singapore. Since I need to transfer large amount of money (over 10,000 USD) from my US bank to my local Singapore bank, I'd like to know what the best ways are. I've looked at direct international wire between banks, http://www.ozforex.com.au, travelex, PayPal, Western Union, but the effective exchange rate were all much worse than direct ATM withdraw using my Fidelity ATM card. However, I can only withdraw $500 per day using ATM card. It seems that there has to be a way to get better exchange rate when transferring large amount of money than transferring small amount of money, but I haven't found a way yet.

  • Answer:

Explore Peer to peer currency transfer systems. The only system I've found thus far supporting your desired currency pair is http://CurrencyFair.com . These platforms are peer to peer, and are not dependent on "interbank rates", customers sometimes achieve better rates than interbank, for an 'up to date' list see http://kevinblackman.posterous.com/startup-of-the-day-httptransferwisecom  - person to person currency exchange marketplace, customers exchange currency with customers  - review and choose the best rate on offer from other customers  - place your own rate and wait to be matched

You should ask the money changer if they can do such thing as money transferring for you or to ask your friend if they have friend that is money changer and willingly to do so. I have been transferring money for my client( large amount of money) in and out from a lot of country. Most of the time they will only be different 1-2% different from spot rate and larger amount will be less in difference. (P.S: I do not guarantee every money changer will for you as they have their rules too. :)

You can try using a brokerage account if you have one. Do a fx conversion of your usd to sgd. Then get the brokerage to wire it as sgd to your local singapore account.

Go to Chinatown or lucky plaza or little India most of money changers there offer very competitive rate , be it a cash or tt transaction. I can honestly say these rates are not so far off the inter bank rates, and i doubt any big institution can offer anything even close.

Wire transfer or credit transfer is a method of electronic funds transfer from one person or institution (entity) to another. A wire transfer can be made from one bank account to another bank account or through a transfer of cash at a cash office, such as Western Union. Wire transfer systems are intended to provide more individualized transactions than bulk payment systems,@http://www.nydinar.com

Through your bank. Best thing to do is go to your bank tell them that you want to remit XYZ amount of USD to someone. Check the current exchange rate on Bloomberg or some other website at that point. The bank will quote you a price that will be all inclusive of charges. Negotiate the price by a few cents. (Higher the amount you want to remit lower the cost). After fixing the cost the bank will then debit the equivalent amount from your bank account with them. Example 1USD = 20 SGD (calculations for this purpose only. I'm not aware of the real conversion) Say you want to send 500USD to someone. Therefore it will cost you 10000SGD (500 x 20) Now bank says that there commission will be 20 cents to a USD (means that's their cost+profit for providing you his service) So your new cost will be 10100 (500 x 20.20). That 20 cents is negotiable. Ask them to quote a figure that includes all taxes and cost. And that figure may be negotiable. A little hard bargaining may shave of 2-3 cents. Not all banks have the same cost so feel free to show around.  But some things you will have to know before you want to send money this way. You will need the following data from the person who will receive this money. Name of person receiving the money (as on bank account) Bank name Account number Address of branch where account is held. SWIFT code the branch. Execpt the swift code the person would probably be knowing this. And SWIFT code can be found out by asking the bank. This is much cheaper and should not cost more than 0.8% - 1% (including all costs and taxes). Whereas something like PayPal will cost you upwards of 5-6% (after factoring forex conversion cost). Hope this helped.

You can transfer money from Singapore to US, via Wire Transfer, or even via Western Union/Money Gram (albeit the latter has a US$ 10,000 limit). For wire transfer to the US, you need the following: Beneficiary's Bank's Name Address Account Title Account Number ABA Routing # SWIFT Code If they are using a correspondent bank, then you would need, Correspondent Bank's Name Correspondent Bank's Address Beneficiary Bank's Account Title in Correspondent Bank Beneficiary Bank's Account Number in Correspondent Bank's ABA Routing # SWIFT Code Your wire transfer company would know exactly how to route this. Although, it is not a bad idea to take the international wire transfer instructions from the bank.
