Why is it so hard to convert a VHS to DVD perfectly?

What product can help me convert VHS and DVD to a computer file?

  • I see lots of software/hardware combo packs for converting VHS to DVD, but are there any products out there that can help me convert both VHS and DVD to computer files?  I've got tons of both VHS and DVD, but don't want more DVDs...I want to store everything on my external hard drive.  How do I get them there?

  • Answer:

Here are two options: The first is Elgato Video Capture. http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/Video-Capture/product3.en.html I believe it's $99. It's Mac only, so if you use PC you're put of luck. It records in 640x480 (4x3) or 640x360 (16x9). Basically, it's a solid consumer option. The other option is Blackmagic Video Capture. http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/videorecorder/ $149 This is a much more robust solution offering a lot more versatility. Both have RCA and S-Video connecting to your computer via USB.
