Where can i donate clothes in London?

Where can I donate clothes in London?

  • Answer:

I think it depends who you want to donate them to! 1. Charity shops Most areas have second hand shops run by national charities that will accept donations of clothes. Look for eg. Age UK, British Heart Foundation, or Oxfam shops. They're easier to find in slightly less well off areas - loads in tooting, not so many on Oxford Street. (Althought there is a Salvation Army shop just behind Oxford Circus). If you're doing this, be nice and drop off clothes INSIDE during opening hours, or they'll be distributed across the pavement by morning. 2. Recycling banks Local council recycling stations often have hoppers you can put bags of clothes and shoes in to. You can also often find these next to bottle banks etc in Supermarket car parks. Often full to overflowing, the clothes are, I think, processed centrally then redistributed to charities or sold for rags. 3. Hospital friends shops Many big hospitals have their own charity shops. Ring and check before turning up though! 4. Kerbside collections In some residential areas, you'll often get donation bags posted through your letter box. These can be filled and collected kerbside on given days. Some look to be kosher, but I suspect that some are low-level entrepreneurship where donations are sold on (I have no proof, just a bit of a nose for this kind of thing!). I'd check credentials before using them. 5. Marks and Spencer National treasure M&S now have a recycling partnership with Oxfam. Taking in clothes to M&S will give you money off vouchers, and benefit charity. Brilliant, brilliant idea. http://plana.marksandspencer.com/about/partnerships/oxfam/shwopping Personally, I donate to My local Age UK / AgeConcern charity shop: if you get a supporter number associated with your donation, the charity can claim tax relief, and you'll get updates on what your goods raise, which you can claim against tax if you're a high bracket tax payer.

Two additional options: 1. Dress for Success.  If you have women's clothes (or shoes or other accessories like handbags or jewellery) that are appropriate for work, you can donate them to Dress for Success in Islington.  They're a charity that offers clothes, styling advice and coaching to women who are trying to get into work.  If the clothes my mother sends me are any indication, she lives in eternal hope that I will someday get into banking or something.  Alas, I very much work in a field that does not require me to wear a suit so I've had several opportunities to donate clothes to Dress for Success (sorry mom).  When you drop the clothes off, DfS will give you a tour of their office and show you the amazingly tidy space where they keep all the clothes and style the women they work with.  They may have other drop-off points around town as well.  http://www.dressforsuccess.org.uk 2. Freecycle.  You'd be surprised what people will take.  I've given away old shoes, towels, bed linens, fabric scraps.  Good if you like knowing that your stuff is going to an actual person.  Even better if you like the idea of meeting them when they come to pick the stuff up.
