What are good ways to explain company's poor revenue numbers during a job interview?
-
I am interviewing for senior/executive level marketing jobs at a number of companies. My current company is a small company which has not grown very much since it started (about 10 years ago). The others in the executive staff (primarily the CEO - my boss) made it perfectly clear that they did not want to invest time nor money into marketing which impact the company's revenue. However, during this time I worked with a number of companies who did appreciate my work (I have samples) where their revenue figures were much better. Is there a way to gracefully tell a hiring manager that you have the background to lead marketing efforts with great results, though not at the company you are currently working with? I am afraid that answering this question may impact my chances in getting a decent job may be jeopardized because of this limitation. Hopefully I am stressing for nothing, but you never know. Any thoughts?

Answer:
During the interview, highlight job experiences where your skills and accomplishments shine brightest. Based on your description, it sounds it would be your experiences at previous companies. However, if asked about your performance at your current company, it's important that you set appropriate context. For example, you may have had a $0 marketing budget, but how did you make the most of it? Or perhaps you were only allowed to spend 10 hrs. a week marketing, how did you make the most of those 10 hrs.? Do keep the interview positive. It's not an opportunity to criticize the CEO's choice to de-emphasize marketing. You may perceived as not being a team player and hard to please. Photo credit: marsmet545
