Why does Parse use Javascript?

Can complex web apps be developed using the Parse Javascript API?

  • Can web apps similar in complexity to Rails apps be developed using the Parse Javascript API? I don't know how to code, but am thinking of using the Parse Javascript API as a way to make web apps. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Why not! Parse is awesome. They are just taking care of your backend. There's a lot more than just a backend in a webapp. Parse is taking care of your backend by providing an API. You will still have to write all your application logic. Parse won't help you create hardcore solutions like converting documents but for data based apps, its a pretty cool thing. It seems the tech stacks for a PaaS like Heroku and a BaaS like Parse are similar. So is the difference between the two more marketing than technical? It doesn't seem that a lot of web apps use Parse as as a PaaS, but with it's big free tier and managed MongoDB, it seems that Parse is more economical than some PaaS services like Heroku. Am I missing something in terms of possible disadvantages of using Parse as a PaaS for a web app?

Guess it depends on what you mean I guess. As I recall Parse is a non-relational database. I was mucking about with it for a mobile app I was doing. Javascript can definitely interface with it, but if you want to pull from multiple tables it may take more work on the javascript end. Using a framework like jQuery can help.
