How does a bill become a law?

In India, how long does it take for a bill to become law?

  • Not a political debate. I'm just wondering if someone has crunched numbers to see how many days/months does it take for a bill to become law? Just curious with the Lokpal Bill et al.

  • Answer:

I don't think there is any typical time frame for a bill to become law. If the government wants they can push through a bill into law within days or it can remain in parliament for years without any movement on it. For example the budget' is typically introduced on 28 th February as a finance bill and usually become law with a few weeks at most so that it can become effective from the 1st of April. There are may instances of bills being introduced and passed within days or weeks. In case the parliament is not in session and the government wants to pass a law it deems necessary it can pass an ordinance which is a temporary law that can later ( within 6 months) be approved by Paliament making it permenant. However most other bills take longer, especially if they are referred to committees.  Many bills like the  lokpal bill or the companies bill or direct tax code have been in stuck in parliament forever.
