The best method is to use a professional that is VERY knowledgeable about cars, paints, etc.  But to do it yourself I'll add to what said, since ALL of his points are VERY good tips.  In addition to avoiding sunlight, make sure your car is cool before you start washing it as well.  Also ensure that you're using soft water if possible to avoid the least amount of damage to the paint.  And when using a sponge or cloth, be sure to wipe in a "s" patter vs. circles when applying the soap.

Then dip the sponge into the clean water rinse it and then put it into the soapy water and start from inside to outside and from top to bottom.
