Have you been demoted from your position at your current job?

I was demoted from an assistant manager position because i did not report an employee was quitting. Is this withholding information?

  • I was demoted from an assistant manager position. the employee asked me not to say anything and she wanted to give her notice on her own once she found out if she got this new job. I asked my other assistant manager to make a schedule without her on it so I could see how short we would be. This manager said she agreed with me "100%" and I should not tell our direct supervisor. So, the next day my partner assistant manager told our direct supervisor and they demoted me before even asking me about this situation. During my demotion write up I told them everything that had gone on, I have no reason to lie. This employee spoke with the manager and gave her 2 week notice the next day. I do not see how this was withholding information when the event had not even started yet, and the employee was not planning on just walking out?!?! My direct supervisor told me I am to report anything said to me from any subordinate and she will decide if its important. I feel this is harassment to me and our employees.

  • Answer:

The first thing you have to understand that there is an adversarial relationship between managers and front-line people. This means that, as a manager, you are to always make your decisions based upon what is best for management. Your mistake was to not tell your manager immediately when you found out the employee was quitting. It might seem wrong, but this is the way management works. :(

I don't know what to say to this. I do find it curious that the other assistant manager "Agreed 100%" about not telling your direct supervisor about this subordinate then proceeded to do so anyway. If you end up working with this individual again, you better work with your eyes wide open with this cookie because it is obvious this (gal?) doesn't like you, is bucking for promotion, or is just an insensitive ass. I wouldn't even steal a PAPERCLIP with this gal around. The only other thing I can tell you is you live and learn. I guess if this happens again, then say something. Good luck.

This does not constitute harassment in the case that on being appointed an assistant manager, you were instructed to report on any matter pertaining to the efficient running of the business. If the employee had eventually not left the business, you would have a better case in the Labor Laws. Otherwise, the business maintains all jurisdictions.
