How do I format my memory card on my computer?

Why does my computer want to format my memory card every time I put it in?<br>

• It works great in my camera! I'm wanting to transfer my pictures on to my computer but every time I put my memory card in my laptop it tells me I need to format it. I don't want to format it because I don't want to lose my pictures! Any suggestions on what I should do or ideas on what may be wrong?
