What is the best Jellyfish Sting Treatment?

What Is The Treatment For Jellyfish Sting?

  • Answer:

Please see, “Evaluation of the effects of various chemicals on discharge of and pain caused by jellyfish nematocysts” appearing in the May 2010 issue of the “Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Journal”. The article states that vinegar, ammonia, meat tenderizer, baking soda, urine and other homeopathic cures, not only doesn’t stop the pain of a jellyfish sting, they exacerbate the pain by causing the immediate discharge of the remaining nematocysts. The article further states that Lidocaine, in a 4% solution, stops the pain in minutes and prevents sting cells (nematocysts) that haven't discharged from discharging. There is one commercial product available that contains 4% Lidocaine.

Don't put fresh water on a saltwater jellyfish sting. If you're still nearby the sea, rinse with salt water. I have heard vinegar works to relieve stings if it isn't a man-o-war jellyfish sting, but it would be wise to see a doc promptly . ..Some jellyfish are very venomous and their stings can be fatal - so don't put it off! Good luck! PS - Most doctors say meat tenderizer is a bad idea. Wet sand can be soothing, but it's not the cleanest answer/can cause additional complications from infection.
