It’s a matter of privacy - I don’t know of any instant messengers that let you see who your contacts are talking to. I think they assume that if your friend wants you to know who they’re talking to, they’ll tell you. Think about it the other way around – would you want your contacts to see who you’re talking to? Sometimes we’re just not in the mood to talk to a certain person, even though we’re chatting with others.  If you’d told one person that you were doing homework and couldn’t talk, but they saw you chatting to several other people, they’d probably get offended. Is It Rude To Ask Someone Who They’re Chatting To? Not really – it depends how you word it, though. If you ask it in a casual, friendly way, they’ll probably answer you without thinking much of it. However, if you suddenly demand to know who they’re talking to, it’s not likely to go down so well!
