How to change HDD's on laptop?

Change hard drive from not working screen laptop to a working screen laptop?

  • My laptops screen just died, my mother told me I could use her old laptop which was 100% working, but I want to keep using all my stuff I had on my own laptop, so, should I swap the HDD? I know how to take a Hard Drive apart and everything, just tell me, do I need like to install something before changing HDDs? or should I just swap them while both laps are off?

    if they're the exact same model, it should work just fine. the problems arise when they aren't -- different motherboards require different drivers and the drivers are saved on the hdd -- so your hdd in her machine may very well not work at all because a required driver might well be missing.

You can change the hard disk provided that the old laptop HDD connector is compatible with your HDD. For example, if your drive is a SATA and the old laptop drive is IDE, then that is going to be rather difficult. If the above does not apply, then by all means, you can proceed with removing the old drive and installing your own. One thing you will notice when Windows boots up is that your video display is not correct, your sound does not work, you wireless (if it's got one) and network adapter do not work as well. In other words, you need to go to this laptop manufacturer site and download all needed drivers for whichever OS you have and install them.

Does the laptop work at all? Swapping the hard drives will only work if you both have the same notebooks. System driver software of a different computer will prevent it loading and you will just be met with a blue screen of death. If you can plug your laptop into a secondary monitor or a TV and then copy the data over onto an external drive (or put your drive into a HDD enclosure) that would work better.
