My laptop keeps shutting down?

My laptop keeps shutting down as soon as I turn it on. I can't get system restore up in time?

  • I have a Vaio laptop... It's around 1 or 2 years old now and yesterday, while I was online, it shut down completely out of the blue. I have titanium Internet security so it can't be a virus. My laptop wasn't hot, so it wasn't an overheat. Just to make sure, I closed it and left a couple fans running in front of it to clear any dust or hot air. Today I tried turning it on again. After I logged in, it shut down completely again. I tried again. Same results. I think it may be the battery located on the bottom of the laptop. Do they run out? Should I buy another one? If not, what is causing this? I'm on my family's PC right now and I need my laptop back. Please help.

To rule out the battery, remove it and run the laptop on the AC adapter only. If it doesn't power on with just the AC adapter, then the adapter is bad. If it boots to Windows but still shuts down then power-on again with just the AC adapter, boot into safe mode and see what happens. If the laptop still shuts down in safe mode, try powering up and going to the CMOS setup screen (F2) and let the laptop idle there for a time longer than it takes to shutdown in Windows. If it doesn't shutdown here, then it is most likely a driver issue. If it DOES shutdown in the CMOS screen after awhile then then heat is a problem.
