Why do photos take so much space on iPod Touch?

I have only .59 gb left on my 8 gb iPod Touch 4g. My photos and videos were taking up 2.2 gb and I had over 180 items in my camera roll. I deleted 70 hi-res ones after I read they took up loads of space, but it didn't do anything! Then I deleted 18 more which also did nothing. I'd like more space so I can add more songs. But I only have 94 items in my camera roll now, and only 15 could possibly be hi-res and the rest are just regular pics from the iPod's camera and it still takes up 2.2 gb! I also remember when I still had like 200 items, it only took up around 1.5 or around 2. I don't get it! Any answers please??

It would vary on the quality of the photo really. The better the quality of a photo and resolution the more space it takes when it's downloaded. If you want to see how it would play out. I would suggest (if you can) put it on a computer and after look on the computer (by mousing over it) to see how much space the file is taking.
