What do I do to build a portfolio?

What do I need to build my portfolio?

  • I would like to have a career in photography, but I have no idea what is needed in my portfolio. I am not looking to be persistant in one subject; I'd like to shoot all subjects (Band Photography, Wedding, Landscape, Fashion). I know I need a Dslr camera with an abundance of lenses, good lighting, backdrops, and photo editing software; but what else?

I don't know what the previous guy meant by 'an eye'. It's honestly too vague. But you don't need any of the stuff from your question. Start your portfolio with pics from whatever camera you have... Film, cell phone, little point and shoot, it's all good. If you can't take good photos with those... you can't take good photos with a $10,000 camera/lens combo. The camera you have may be more limited, but you will still be able to take good pics with it. If you really need a camera less limited(as in, more manual controls and better low-light sensitivity), get a point and shoot in the $300 range(Sony DSC-HX20V is one I'd recommend). But build up your portfolio for at LEAST a few years before spending $600-$1000+ on a DSLR!!! You take pictures, not the camera. For example, see below... most of the photos are from my DSLR. And they still are kinda blech.

First learn as much as you can about photography. Later on I think you will find what it is you really want to shoot. You are trying to cover too broad an area to be successful commercially. At the top of the game people specialize. You may cross over into other areas but you specialize in something because it is so highly competitive that it is very unlikely that you will be fantastic in a number of areas of photography. The reason for this is that it takes a different mind set to be a great fashion photographer as opposed to a great landscape photographer.

An eye. Crap camera and good eye is better than a DSLR and "abundance of lenses" and a crappy eye.
