How many people have disabilities?

How much would it cost, to set up a company for people with disabilities and non disabilities?

  • the company could be something to do sport parties socialising taking people shopping fundraising activities going hiking going walking going on holidays going to the pub dating employment jobsearch that's the general idea, i need to think of more ideas, to get people socialising though im trying to think of all the problems, disabled people have in life is it a good idea to mix people with disabilities with non disabled people. i think so. you need a non disabled person. to show someone with a disability how to live and be independent for themselves

  • Answer:

"you need a non disabled person. to show someone with a disability how to live and be independent for themselves" How offensive. If that is your motivation I would want nothing to do with you. People with disabilities have much to teach people without disabilities. We know about trust, communication, survival skills, and a lot of joy. We are not a charity. We can think for ourselves. We need suport to do the things we loves - we do not need help.

People with disability do all the above quite well. They choose what sport they want to do and do it. Some people with disability (mostly intellectual) need extra help so they go to place to learn living silks. Or they have rehabbing to help given back independents. All the thing listed are done. People with all kinds of disability already socialise with non disabled.

It's hard to say how much it would cost. There are too many variables (e.g.: what location you're in, how many people you hope to reach, how extensive you want your services to be, etc.). You might try calling a group home for the disabled. Good group homes will often provide many of the activities and services you provide. Though I don't think it's likely that they'll give you all the details of their finances, they might give you better info than you'll ever get here. Letting disabled people mix with non-disabled people is good, but not for the reasons you say. It can be good to have someone to help you adapt to barriers and live as independently, but that someone should be a trained expert, e.g. a rehab medicine specialist or an occupational therapist (both things that required advanced degrees). Simply hanging out with non-disabled people is not going teach disabled people very much about how to live independently. The person who has actually lived with the disability almost certainly knows more about that than your average, untrained, non-disabled person. Socializing with non-disabled people is good because disabled people are frequently fairly isolated from society, and having the opportunity to interact with diverse groups of people is beneficial for everyone concerned.

I agree with the idea ,although I have no idea how much it would cost. I have a dear friend with Intellectual Disability. He is quite different when he has been with non-I.D people than when he has been with I.D. people. Contact with some non-I.D people makes his speech clearer, his behaviour better and even seems to lift his level of understanding. What you are describing sounds a lot like the things which he already does under Community Connections. How much of that a person takes on depends upon their physical health and personal taste as well as their intellectual level. May I suggest that you add parenting groups to the list? One for the parents of disabled children, one for the parents of disabled adults and one for disabled parents? There seems to be a real need.More can be learned and more effectively from"Here is what worked for my son/daughter" than from any lecture Support, not charity.. By the way,it was the I.D friend I mentioned before who put me on to using a Snapper ( a sort of concession card open to everyone). I am a great one for putting things off and so things don't get done. He said "You should get a snapper,it works out so much cheaper",took me into the shop to buy the card and put some money on to it,taught me how to use it. He was right too. It works out so much cheaper and it is really handy!
