What would extreme radiation do to the body?

What is black body radiation?

  • Question says it all. Is it just another word for infrared radiation?

  • Answer:

A body which absorbs all radiations incident upon it and reflects none at all is called an ideal Black body. Lamp black is very nearly a Black Body. In Practice, a Black Body can be realized by taking a hollow closed chamber with its walls insulated and maintained at a certain temperature. If a very small hole is made in the wall of the chamber, any radiation incident on the hole will enter in to the chamber and has very little chance of coming out of the chamber and the radiation is said to be absorbed by the body. Such a body is an ideal Black Body. The radiations emitted by such a Black body is Black body radiation. It consists of radiations of all wavelengths. The intensity of radiation gradually increases with wavelength, has a maximum value for a certain wavelength and thereafter falls gradually at higher wavelengths. The wavelength corresponding to maximum intensity depends upon the temperature of the black body. Electromagnetic radiations having wavelengths in the range 8*10^(- 5) cm to 0.04 cm approximately may be called Infrared radiations and are characterized by their heating effects.

No. It refers to a certain model of the entire spectrum of electromagnetic radiation from an object. The spectrum always has a certain shape, but the peak wavelength depends on temperature. Our sun's spectrum (like all stars) is a blackbody spectrum, and the peak is in the visible. But the spectrum goes from gamma rays (very weak in our sun) to the infrared (sun gives a lot of that, but more visible) to the radio (very weak). The peak of our sun's blackbody radiation is the one predicted for a temperature of about 5800 K. The cosmic background radiation is also a blackbody spectrum, for a body of about 2.7 K. Its peak is in the radio spectrum, with essentially no infrared or visible radiation. A piece of coal that is red hot has a blackbody spectrum with a peak somewhere in the red or infrared.
