Employee Parking Ticket In Employer Car?

In Michigan- Car broken into while on the job, is my employer liable?

  • Today at work my coworker and I noticed someone running past the drive through window and hop into the passenger seat of a car that drove off--- my coworker immediately went to check on our vehicles which were parked in the employee spaces behind the store, finding that my car had been broken into. Because we did not get a good glimpse of the individual, the only details we could provide to police were the body type and color of the car, and the race and height of the individual. The employee parking (and the entire building, itself) is not under any sort of security or surveillance. We have never had issues of this nature before, but now several of us on the night crew are questioning the level of saftey on our job--- which requires us to stay past midnight often in a poorly-lit area. The issue of security has been brought to the owners' attention a few times in the past, but nothing has been done (the same can be said for having a First Aid Kit on hand, but I suppose that's a question for later). Can my employer be held accountable?

  • Answer:

The only ways that your employer could be held responsible for someone breaking into your car is if you are using your car for company business while on the clock or if you park in a secured parking lot controlled by your employer. In any other circumstance, it is your own insurance on the vehicle that would cover any losses.
