How much will I really work as a machinist?

I am thinking about becoming a machinist for a big company. I understand that there will be plenty of required overtime and will have to work 6 or 7 days a week sometimes. But my question is, will that be pretty much the standard work week for my whole career? Or is that just during busy times. In other words, as a machinist, will I ever have another weekend to spend with my family? Cause if i'm just gonna be working 6-7 days a week for the rest of my life, I would rather just not pursue it. Any personal experience would be helpful. Thanks.
