Good books to read for a thirteen year old girl?
-
I'm 13 and I am fond of reading, but only if the book REALLY interests me. If it does, I read it continuously, pausing only for sleep and other obvious necessities, till its finished. But if it doesn't, I hardly manage to go past the first or second chapter. I have read Enid Blytons, Roald Dahls, harry Potter and Twillight and Percy Jackson and they were great, but now I'm sick of books with teenage protagonists. Even though i haven't read Hunger Games or Artemis Fowl , I just don't want to read them. But I don't mind books like George and his secret key to the universe series, which give a whole lot of info along with an intriguing story. Now, I've shifted to Dan Brown, and I've read Da Vinci code and Lost symbol. (I still have to buy the rest.) But unfortunately, my reading happens in phases, and i read the books in 2-3 days max, and then I don't have anything to read. And about the classics : Most of them, I've read the abridged version when I was younger, so I know the story and everything, so I don't want to read them again. And I don't want to read books like "Little Woman:" and "Pride and Prejudice" now, because I'm not such a fan of laid back stories about girls and their boy friends. I might read them a few months down the line, I guess. I'm going to read Jane Eyre, even though I've seen the movie. So, what other good books are there? I'd prefer something like Da Vinci Code, because it has action, and loads of strange and hidden knowledge and things that make you wonder, even if they're not true. Apart from that, it's also great to increase vocabulary.

Answer:
i applaud you and your diverse reading. i agree-i love artemis fowl but the story lines cant help but become cliche and boring. i found that i enjoyed real life situations better about anorexia/drugs/divorce/school shootings and yeah i know sounds like what parents want us to read but in a way its a form of escape even though it sucks. it means their life isn't perfect and is possible more screwed than mine and half the time their still screwed at the end and there's no happy ending. maximum ride is an amazing series but had a slow start and besides i read that at 12 so probs too young. beautiful monster, hate list, small steps are all good books. i have the same problem except im 14 so please say what books you found were good

Based on your comments about action and strange and hidden knowledge/things that make you wonder, I would say "Catching On Fire" by Sue Knott is a pefect fit. Here's a link to the paperback on Amazon, but it's also available as an ebook and at B&N: https://www.createspace.com/3823059 It also sounds like you might like some historical fiction. Good historical fiction offers really interesting stories plus it takes you into another world, like the popular dystopian fiction does, but this world is real! I'd suggest "Mrs. Mike," which is more about the story than the historical setting (Alaska two generations ago). Here's a link to the cheapest papeback version, but it is also available as an ebook, etc.: http://www.amazon.com/Mrs-Mike-Story-Katherine-Flannigan/dp/0425103285/ref=tmm_mmp_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1338097568&sr=1-1 And "The Color of Lightning" which is way more historical than most in that it follows the (extremely intesting) story of real persons on the Ameican frontier including a freed slave, settlers and Indians. It is very, very violent and historically accurate. (The first 2 chapters are tough to get through because the author needs to introduce so many characters that its a bit confusing and she doesn't have time to flesh them out until she introduces them all: http://www.amazon.com/The-Color-Lightning-A-Novel/dp/B002NSLMWM/ref=tmm_hrd_title_popover?ie=UTF8&qid=1338098018&sr=1-1

I really enjoyed books written by Tamora Pierce, especially the Protector of the Small quartet. I also enjoy reading Garth Nix, especially the ones based in the Old Kingdom, both authors write fantasy- Garth Nix also writes sci-fi. The Inheritance Cycle, better known as the Eragon series, by Christopher Paolini, is also (mostly) enjoyable. I first read these books not long before I turned thirteen, and I'm fourteen in three months and still enjoy them. Hope I helped!

I just finished three Kate Mosse books- you might like "Labyrinth". http://www.librarything.com/work/100884 A mix of contemporary/historical fiction with a Grail quest. "Alice Tanner (who begins assisting on an archeological dig and feels an inexplicable draw to the location and artifacts that she finds) and Alais du Mas, who lives in the late 12th, early 13th century in the same location. When Alice loses consciousness while searching for artifacts, she begins to dream of Alais's life. A grand conspiracy and lives connected across centuries." "Codex" by Lev Grossman. http://www.librarything.com/work/53053 Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco http://www.librarything.com/work/2108/summary
