Generally only the highest grade iron deposits are mined as they produce the most iron for the least cost. Iron deposits can often be found in surface rock. Iron ore is grey, yellow, or red is colour depending on it purity and other minerals present with it. High grade iron ores called "hematite", "or "magnetite" are shiny grey colour and an magnetic, lower grade iron ores may be red or yellowish in colour.
