Is free trade fair trade?

Free Trade vs. Fair Trade?

  • Will the boycott of free trade products and the support of fair trade products by consumers lead to a more equitable economic system for the United States? This is my debate question.

  • Answer:

Free trade = countries trading without any barirers ie quota/tarrif Fair trade = the workers in 'lower GDP' countries actually get paid You cant really boycot free trade (unless you are 95-100% of the consumers). If everything was fair trade yes, it could be more equitable for the workers. I would debate that you cant really boycott free trade, and even if you could people wouldn't want to pay the extra price it cost to do so (opertunity and accounting)

What's a "free trade product"? I'm not convinced your debate question is rational. Fair trade IS free trade - in fact, it's "freer" free trade then "free trade", since it attempts to balance the market power of the rich west and it's agricultural and trade policies, thus making the playing field more level.
