A scratch is rusting on my car door. What to do, if anything?
-
I nicked my car door as I was getting out of my car parked in the garage. The scratch is vertical alongside the edge of the door, it's about as long as your pinky finger and as wide as a pencil. Anyway, I can already see rust growing inside the scratch, which is worrying me. I heard that rust is cancer to a car, and so I want to fix this. Like I said, the scratch is not big, but since you can already see specks of grey in it (which I assume is metal), the scratch is probably deep. I care less about the car looking perfect, and care more about the long-term health of it. What should I do? Is there anything I can do by myself? Or should I take it to a body shop? If I do take it to a body shop, what would they do to treat this?

Answer:
Buy some heavy grit sand paper and a lighter grit sand paper. Sand the area down with the heavy grit sand paper until all the rust is gone. Then clean the area with rubbing alcohol. Cover the surrounding area with newspaper and masking tape to protect from overspray. Spray with primer following the instructions on the label, sand it it lightly with the lighter sandpaper, then spray with the paint again following the instructions on the can. Probably the best paint/primer you can get is from duplicolor. If you live in Canada you can get it from Canadian Tire, If you live in the states, http://www.duplicolor.com/wheretobuy/ go to that website and find a dealer. Duplicolor has exact color matches for every make of vehicle so make sure you get the right paint for your vehicle.

you can sand the rust off, and get some body filler putty they sell at napa, in tube, just like a tooth paste...apply on the sanded area...sand with 2000 or 1500 sand paper...apply primer, and then paint. or you can just add something to prevent water to come in contact with the scratch. remember rust needs water and oxygen to form itslef.

what you can do to stop or slow the rusting from getting worse is. 1.spray it with rust proof or any chemical liquids made for cars. 2.wax it with any type of oil(cooking oil works fine) 3.do it occasionally.

You can do this. Duplicolor makes a kit. First clear the rust out with abrasive or chemical. then just protect the metal. Here's a link http://www.duplicolor.com/scratchfix/
