Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water System for Drinking and Aquarium?

  • I’m looking at having this Reverse Osmosis (RO) system installed under my sink so that I can have water for drinking / cooking and to use for my planted freshwater aquarium. Do I really need the DI part? What are the advantages to have one with a pump?

    The pump is for boosting water pressure to the unit. Ro membranes need ariund 50psi to work properly. DI is unnessicary for drinking water. At the rate you would use it, it would need nearly weekly replacement. If you wanted to you could tee off the line after the ro unit. Run one to your drinking water and the other to a di canister used only for your tank. In my opinion ro is overkill for drinking water. You would take care of flavor and clarity with sediment and carbon filters.

The deionization(DI) you might really want. The pump is not really necessary, I don't think, if you are on a town or city water system. It's just there to increase the flow rate. There is nothing wrong with drinking deionized water. Deionization does not remove the hydroxide or hydronium ions from water. These are the products of the self-ionization of water to equilibrium and therefore are impossible to remove. All the deionization process does is remove some mineral salts.

It has not been proven but all the de ionization does is lower the total dissolved solids(tds) in the water. Typically from 5ppm(parts per million) to 0ppm. You typically do not need a booster pump. What type of aquarium do you have? Freshwater, Saltwater, Reef? You really only need it if you have a reef.

This is a fairly decent system from Crystal Clear. It comes at a reasonable price. Check the reviews out. Their systems are fine. You don't need a DI system, this is a little better than Brita but not much more expensive either http://amzn.to/JMusST Cheers.
