How long will Rit Dye last on clothes?

• I am trying to dye my husband's favorite cotton black shorts black again. The sun faded his left side of the shorts and the other side is darker. Now I heard liquid Rit dye is best to use bertter than the powder and is less expensive. Is liquid Rit dye fiber reactive and will it stick on cotton fabric? How much is Rit dye in walmart? Also does anyone one out there who has ever used liquid Rit dye, know how long has it lasted on your clothes? I am trying to spend the least amount of money on dyeing his shorts again and make the color last. Lastly I've read about Procion MX dye. How long would this product last on cotton shorts? Anyone know how much one bottle would be and where I can buy it in stores I am in the Broward County area in Florida. The thing is I know it is fiber reactive but want to know if it is cheaper to buy the Procion MX then the Rit dye I will get the Procion MX so it would depend. Can anyone help me with these questions Please and Thanks in advanced.

  Rit is a union dye; it contains different dyes for various fibers -- a "one size fits mostly all" solution. It is not particularly colorfast nor does it dye well in deep tones, and black is a particularly difficult color to get a good color from-- with Rit, you're more likely to get a bluey-grey. Me, I'd go with Procion MX -- it's easier to handle, imho, and better dyeing on cotton.
