What do Buddhist believe in and what do they want for themselves?

Do you ever hear someone try to justify their own beliefs by saying, "Just let me believe what I want believe"?

  • Or is that only used to justify other people's beliefs? If it's just used for other people, doesn't that imply that other people only believe things based on what they want to be true? That's probably why no one uses it on themselves. Therefore, isn't saying, "Just let other people believe what they want!" a way to make other people seem inferior? You're implying they believe things because they want to, but you don't say it about yourself because you think your beliefs are based on facts. I think it's code for, "So what if they believe things because those beliefs make them feel good? We should still be nice to them even if they're mentally inferior."

  • Answer:

Yes. But it's said when justification fails and is questioned. Not as justification. You've heard it too, in another wording. "It's just faith, friend. You can't disprove or prove faith, and I am a believer." Same thing, only not spoken like a 15 year old.

What right do you have to NOT let them believe what they want? Maybe they say that because they're tired of arguing with a judgmental idiot and this is the nicest way of putting it.

I'm more concerned about control freaks like you who can't stand anyone to think freely. Go jump. (there's a lot like you posting from Canada.. must be something in the water)

I think those people are kind of missing the point. The point isn't that people have a right to believe what they want, of course they do, the question is whether we should seek to reduce unfounded beliefs via better education and argument.

I will ask if they care if what they believe is true.

I find this especially to be true of those who establish solely science to explain their lives and the universe around them. "It's all fact!" They scream as they sling insults at those with spiritual beliefs... but I haven't seen anyone in the genral public analyze the existence of electrons for instance. Though I don't doubt electrons exist, until they have witnessed them for themselves, it comes down to their belief in the science community's efficacy and honesty when they choose to regard electrons as truthfully real...

I try to reason with simple basic spiritual truth to different people both religious and atheist. At some point the person will be able to look, evaluate, and decide to get rid of the false information they have collected and accept the truth or at least be very interested. Sometimes the individual will want to hold onto false-information and that is their choice, which is fine with me, and I just move on. I never persist or tell the person their wrong. Each individual has their own way of viewing life and should have the choice (right or wrong) to believe as they wish too.

I believe you're a troll, kind of like that insane girl who cuts and pastes the same thing about "someone staring at her". (You know, like she JUST came backf rom a trip, bt she has asked it EVERY day for months.)
