HONDA CIVIC 2001 electric clutch on the compressor?

Self install 2001 Honda Civic lx A/C compressor?

  • I own a 2001 Honda civic lx and recently my a/c stopped working. I took my car to a mechanic and he told me my clutch fell off because of old barring and i need a new a/c compressor. He gave me a subtotal of $800 to fix. Can i do it myself or just take it to the mechanic?

  • Answer:

Yes you could do it yourself but I would highly suggest getting a good book on automotive a/c. Not following the right steps you could injure yourself or damage parts in the a/c system.

Replacing the actual compressor isn't that big of a deal, because it's easy to get at. The time & $$$ comes when the system must be cleaned & purged before any freon is installed. Most good places put a vacuum pump on the system for like 24 hours, to make sure all the moisture is gone.

If only the clutch assembly has to be replaced you can do it yourself. The clutch assembly is much cheaper but can be hard to find. If the entire compressor has to be replaced it is a job for a professional or the new compressor may not last long. I will do internal engine work and did refrigerant loop work in the days of R12 but R134a is a whole different game.
