How to convert movies from VCD discs to DVD discs?

Is there any possible way to convert or add storebought DVD's to iTunes and burn iTunes movies to discs?

I'm more interested in putting DVD's on my iPod, but I have no clue how.
Answer:

I use Handbrake http://handbrake.fr It might not be the best, but it is free and very easy to use, and includes presets for converting to iPads, iPods, and other common portable devices.
