the UN is a valuable organization for the vision of dialogue and promoting world peace ... don't let anyone tell you otherwise ... some lessons in civilization need not be learned more than once ... believe in what is good, healthy, and sustainable for improving the quality of life for each and every human being ... we need the UN!!

It exists, grows and performs because it is good. Had it been bad, it would have ended up an another League of Nations.

UN is a useless organization. The General Assembly is an international sitcom and a mess.

Rather than offering a moral judgement, it's best to be impartial. There are clear benefits of the UN, but it's downsides spring generally from the power placed into the Security Council and its structural immobility, meaning that the permanent 5 members are very unlikely to ever seek change or support it. because of what they stand to use. Countries such as the UK and France have permanent status and a veto right, but newer, emerging countries such as India and the economic power of Germany have no representation. On top of this, key areas such as South America and South-East Asia remain unrepresented. The structure of the Security Council has led many to see the UN as simply being a tool for the greater powers to further their own interests and use it as a way of monitoring others. The UN can easily be bypassed - e.g. Iraq invasions, where the US and UK acted unilaterally without support of the Security Council, which under its own charter promotes pacifism and force as a last resort. There is no strong coercive mechanism against any of the bigger member states, because of the nature of international society. Despite being seen as a good security organisation, it has no collective security remit. The UNSC passed a resolution that stated it was up to individiual member states to organise their own counter-terrorism measures. Peacekeeping missions haven't always been successful - see Srebrenica and Mogadishu for examples. The 'use of force in self-defence' was originally only for the peacekeepers, who stood and watched as civilians were attacked, but couldn't do anything as they themselves were not targeted. Hope this helps.
