What does an English major do?

What can you do with a stupid english major ?!?

  • Originally, my major was not English. However, when doing school transfers to a more affordable school (the horrible) Ole Miss, they told me that they did not have my minor and said I needed to choose another one. They also told me they didn't specifically have my major, but that English was close enough. Because of this, I had to have an extra year of college to take all the extra useless classes they wanted me to take. Now, I'm graduating next year and have been doing some research as to what jobs I might apply to. I'm learning an English major is USELESS without further education. • You can become a Librarian IF you follow up by getting a MASTERS in Library Science • You can become a teacher IF you follow up by getting a degree in education. • etc I'd list more, but you get the idea. If you can't even be a "librarian" or "english teacher" with an english major, WHAT IN THE WORLD is it good for? Leeching me for money? If I wanted 60k (including Parent Plus loans) in debt with nothing to gain, I would have skipped college and just got a job somewhere else. The only jobs I can get are jobs I don't even need a degree for--which would pay fine if I didn't have to pay what will end up being about 500+ a month in loan repayment. I would like a job that at least has a starting pay of $30,000+ a year (like normal out-of-college jobs). I can get a $20,000 a year job WITHOUT a college degree.

    There are plenty of jobs out there that hire English majors - like publishing companies. And there are many more jobs that only care that you have a college degree, and don't care what it's in - management, insurance, and much more. You'd just start applying for jobs. Your school probably has a career center, even career fairs. Go check them out.

Think about what your English major trained you to do. I'd imagine you did a lot of reading and writing? Literary analysis? Would you say that your education gave you effective written communication skills? Maybe you presented a lot and are a strong public speaker? Apply to jobs that ask for traits that you possess. And even if you don't possess those traits, see if you could pull it off anyway. Also: ask your professors, advisor, etc. if you haven't already. They'll probably have a lot more insight than I do. YOU can do a lot with english DEGREE depending on how you achieve it and carry yourself. alot of english major become journalists / media editors / script editors / even company representatives ... Google "helen thomas" and read up about her.. she graduated with an english degree and she held a prestigious job at the white house as a journalist for more than 60 years.. So you can imagine what a simple degree in english can do to you? Many things can happen... you will fit into journalism / communication / public relations .. jobs easily... AND IN SOME CASES you will have a leg up in those fields.. especially with your ability to comprehend and analyse complex reasoning and language structures. Companies need people who know PROPER English to run their publications!!
