What kind of bow should I get?

What kind of small game have you bagged with a bow? What did you use, how did you get it?

  • Just curious. I'm planning on going after deer this year with my compound, but I think its interesting that people go after small game with a bow. Including squirrel, it must be extremely tough to get squirrel with a bow. I have thought about trying for rabbit if I go out and don't see much deer. I'm not even sure what kind of head works best: judo point, or bludgeon, or broadhead or whatever else is out there? What kind of small game have you taken with a bow? What kind of equipment did you use, and how far did you have to shoot? And, just curious again, what was the meat like? was it all tough and gamey?

  • Answer:

I don't go out after small game with my bow but if im out there and the opportunity presents itself I will sometimes shoot a small game animal with my bow. I have shot a few rabbits and squirrels. Don't know of all the ranges but one rabbit in particular I remember because it was 50 yards. I was using a rage three blade braodhead, I wanted to see how well they worked. The meat was good. Not too gamey.

I once shot a squirrel with a recurve bow and a blunt tipped flu flu arrow. It was killed instantly with the blow to the side of its head. I'm not a great archer, it was a lucky shot. I skinned and gutted it. Then threw it on the grill. Tasted terrible. I haven't eaten another squirrell since. I would, however, try it again, but I would prepare it better.

squirrel no im not a big fan of losing arrows, but prairie dogs yes, 75lb bow, field tips .. mmm probably out to 40 yards or so its been awhile. its not easy but if you practice alot you get better, i would generally get 5 or so everytime i went out .. no i didnt eat them theyre considered nuisance in horse country ..

I have shot squirrel, rabbit, quail and I use rubber blunt tips for the squirrel and rabbit but I use a wire tip for the quail it is like wire loops that stick out to give you a wide tip so you can shoot them out of the air
