How much acetone is in nail polish remover?

If i were to freeze nail polish remover would i get acetone.?

  • anti drugs laws are getting bad, and getting non polar solvents is almost impossible, but i was thinking, nail polish remover contains acetone mixed with other ingredients. but if i froze my nail polish remover and filter would that be pure acetone?

  • Answer:

If you want to separate the acetone from the other ingredients in nail polish remover you will need to do a fractional distillation. Any basic organic chemistry lab will have the necessary equipment. The low boiling point of acetone would make this a rather simple procedure to carry out. Freezing it won't work. The mixture will freeze together as a mixture and not provide any separation. As much as many scientists would like it, fractional freezing is not a viable technique. As far as using the acetone as an organic solvent, it doesn't make a very good one because of the ketone functional group. There are very few reactions that actually use it as a solvent.

I'm pretty sure finger nail polish remover IS acetone

That is not going to work, since everything would be expected to remain soluble. It is unlikely to be simply acetone, and the other components in it will have similar solubililties to acetone. Even freezing it in a dry ice bath probably won't give anything coming out of the acetone solution.
