How much would I have to weigh to model?
-
I'm around 5"8-9, (174cm, I think.) and I weigh a bit under 9 stone, about 8st11. What would I have to weigh to model? (catwalk/haute couture/ anything except glamour! I'm 14, I don't think that would be legal in the UK....) Also if you think modelling would be a good idea, how would I get started? I was offered an interview in the street once, I was stopped by a photographer, but I couldn't make the shoot, and I don't really want to have to wait for scouts to find me again! I'd rather try to get into it myself.

Answer:
Different companies look for different things in a model- High Street- Most high street chains use models that look desirable (as in you want to look like them) but still realistic. For this kind of modelling the weight you suggested would probably be realistic. High Fashion- High fashion designers often use models that are very very skinny, that also hold very bold and striking features. Fitness- Fitness modelling agencies look for girls that are more toned, have strong calfs and washboard stomachs rather than bones. Plus Size- Although this is normally assossiated with rather large women, a lot of plus size models are only size 12 ( below Uk average) Although it is important that you fit yourself into one of these catorgories, be prepared to be open for change as your body and life style changes. Please don't feel you have to look a certain way, at fourteen your body is developing, so there is probably no fix. Rather than putting a label on yourself, try and build a portfolio of different shots, and let agents decide what kind of modelling you should do. In this current day, a lot of designers are using a wide variety of different weights and looks. I want to make it as a designer, and vary the type of model I would use based on the style of the garment. Good Luck

I started fashion modelling when I was 15. The younger you are the better, as you have more time in the spotlight and to build up a portfolio. Models don't have careers that last as long as say, doctors, so agencies tend to want to invest their time in someone young. You should be tall, long-legged, and lean. The minimum height is usually about 5'8", and average weight for a model is 108-125 lbs. These characteristics are partly aesthetic and partly practical: this type of frame looks good on the runway and in front of the camera (which, they say, adds 15 pounds); and a somewhat scrawny build drapes clothing nicely and ensures a good fit in the standard wardrobe. There are always exceptions to the rule, of course - Kate Moss is 5'7" and Gabrielle Reece is a giant 6'3" - but, in general, the closer you are to the industry norm, the better your chances. Your weight and height are perfect for fashion or catwalk modelling. Glamour modelling is not a good route, stick to modelling with your clothes on. ;-)

Being a model really isn't about weight, it's about proportion and measurements, becuse there are many people who have heavy bones and are skinny, and some people of average weight that have light bones and this can impact your weight a bit. Some if the things they look for in a model are; bust and hips the same circumference, tall at least 5.8 m for women. For catwalk modeling I think you need to be about 5.11 and they are more strict with measurements. You've got plenty of time to grow.

It depends on the company you want to model for...

Weight doesn't matter - for high fashion all that matters are your measurements. You need to be within 1" of 34-24-34 as designer samples are always cut to 34-24-34 measurements and you need to be able to fit into these garments without any alterations. Nobody cares how much you weigh as someone with good muscle tone might weigh 20lbs more than a girl of the same size with no muscles. I have worked in the industry for 13 years and have never seen a model step on a scale - they are always measured with a measuring tape at any casting, fitting, agency meeting, etc. My old agency did not have a single scale in the building but had measuring tapes hanging off hooks all over the office 99% of the people approaching you on the street are scams - they tell you that you are model material, offer you a 'free' photo shoot, then after the shoot say the 'shoot' was free but you have to pay up to £1500 for the photos and if you don't pay then you will have to reimburse them £400 for the studio time, hair and makeup, etc Since you are under 18 you can't do anything, only your parents can as an agency is not allowed to speak to you without a parent present. Your parents have to either submit your photos to agencies or bring you to open calls if the agency holds them http://www.associationofmodelagents.org/ama-membership/list-of-current-members.html are all 100% legit agencies and there is information on each of their websites how to be considered as a model

Well for 14 and your 5"8-9 thats good, because women models is harder because they need to be tall, unlike men where height isnt the problem most of the time. I think modeling at 14 isnt the best thing to be honest! BUT! if your serious about this, and you want to become one when your older, just go online and look up some modeling agencies around your area in the uk, make sure its a real site and have your parents check it out with you. Also warning; the guy who asked you to the photoshoot, well i wouldnt trust random people like that, anyone can get a camera and pretend to be a photographer, always have a parent if your under 18, its very important you do in this business. When it comes to weight, thats a kind of hard to answer because people of different weights can have diferent figures, just look up modeling picturees and compare it to you, your posture is very important and your walk. Walking, legs first, hips, body then head, dont lean to far back and not to far forward, try not to move your arms a lot, and walk heel to toe in a straight line. Dont look around whilst you walk, just look forward with a focused face, slow down turn pose, smile, and walk back. Dont move your hips around as much as you think its good, it isnt, just move them slightly. Remember your showing off the clothes not your walk or how hot you are. For doing this at a young age and getting into modeling is a far big advantage for when your older as it would help you a tremendous ammount for getting a proper modeling job. Goodluck!<3
