How Do I Start Composting?

Large scale composting for SALE, how much will i need? When do i start making it?

  • im 16 years old and i want to start an under the table composting business. i will probably sell it to the landscaping business down the road or some local nurseries. i haven't any clue as to how much they will want. -how much do they usually buy from suppliers? -where can i get the carbon materials for free or a low cost? i plan on getting my nitrogen products from wegmans and taking away their "bad" produce. -when do i start the composting? i have read that it takes 6 months, but i have also read that it takes only 6 weeks!! i'm so confused, please elaborate. -what time of year do the businesses tend to buy compost from the supplier?

  • Answer:

to be able to supply compost commercially, you will need lots of space. i make my own compost, but on a much smaller scale, so i can keep an eye on things, and i feel it comes out better. i put lots of fish racks (everything left after the fillets are taken off the fish) as i live on the ocean, as well as seaweed (i rinse the salt water off before it goes into my bin) crab shells, clam shells (again, rinsed off) and also old produce, any trimmed off wilted leaves from my current garden, etc. if you want to make your compost faster, you need to make sure it stays dry, and add a compost accelerator, (composting bacteria) available at any ace hardware. also cow manure is a good ingredient. and finally, earth worms. they will help you out the most. keep in mind this is gonna be some nasty smelling stuff after a while, and the more you have, the worse it will stink. and you will need truckloads and truckloads of raw ingredients to make enough to supply a greenhouse/nursery for even half a season. also, be sure to have the final product tested for NPK values, and ph levels......any agriculture program at a local university can usually help you out with this...i also started making my compost for this year last year, around march, but i always add and mix more and more stuff in as the year goes on, and theres always a little left from the year before,

Your talking being able to come up with many truck loads all season long. "Many truck loads" require 3-6 times that amount of space to put the produce you plan on helping to rot into compost.
